For my non-Dutch friends, Saint Nicolas was a Greek bishop from the town of Myra, nowadays in Turkey. He is the patron saint of children and in Dutch tradition he arrives from Spain in a steamboat every year in December, bringing sweets and gifts for the children that have been good.
From Spain, not Turkey, hence the Spanish music...
